Northeast – Music and Mountains

Nestled between the hilltops of Eastern Himalayas, the remote frontiers of the Northeast comprise a region of rugged beauty — a colourful patchwork of cultures, traditions, landscapes and people. Scenic valleys, intermingled with spectacular dense forests, weave through monasteries, meandering roads and glacial lakes. The pristine beauty of the northeast is further complimented by a climate that calms the mind and rejuvenates the senses.

But beyond the tranquil monasteries of Tawang and the swampy grasslands of Kaziranga, the northeast has a lot more to offer. To intrepid explorers willing to tread outside the periphery of touristy attractions, the northeast has turned out to be a diverse and fascinating experience.

Festivities galore – grand celebrations and unrestrained recreations

Nagaland’s Hornbill festival is one of the biggest extravaganzas of the northeast. Starting from the 1st of December, the weeklong festival showcases the Naga lifestyle in all its glory. Nagaland’s native headhunters adorn their traditional attire and interact with the visitors. Likewise, tourists get an opportunity to explore the local culture. From traditional art displays to fascinating tribal dances, the celebrations continue late into the night. Several musical acts are also performed at the Hornbill Rock Festival, electrifying audiences and setting the stage ablaze. Also, tourists get to gorge on some lip-smacking local cuisine that include exotic preparations made from silkworms, hornets, bamboo worms and eel fish.

Unchained melody – on the Northeastern music trail

Music is woven into the socio-cultural fabric of the northeast and its manifestation can be seen in a number of music festivals organised here. One such is the popular Ziro Festival of Music in Arunachal Pradesh — an outdoor music festival that highlights the independent music scene in India. The festival commenced in 2012 and has gradually gained traction with artists like Steve Shelley, Sha’air n Func, Lee Ranaldo and Indus Creed performing here. The festival is spread over four days and is hosted by Ziro’sApatani people in the Ziro valley.

Taking the fashion foot forward – Northeast and its unbridled penchant for fashion

The fashion milieu of the northeast has always been ahead of the times — pushing boundaries and developing a style that complements and enhances their personalities. Blazing the fashion trail are forerunners like Khasi guitarist and singer, Lou Majaw and celebrity stylist AtsuSekhose. With his innovative hand-embroideries and passion for ethnic crafts and textiles, AtsuSekhose is a name to reckon with in the global haute-couture fashion circuit. In fact, increasing number of people are looking towards the northeast to draw inspiration from their immaculate designs and avant-garde fashion sense.

There is still a lot left to explore and discover in this fascinating world of verdant mountain ranges and picturesque waterfalls. If there is an inner explorer in you, waiting to hit the trail, the northeast is where you should be headed to.
